Mark Kimber Junior ROTAX Max Challenge Grand Final Winner 2016

The big news from the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals for Team U.K is that Mark Kimber has won the Junior Max World title after Marco Settimo received a ten second penalty. You literally couldn’t write it, after qualifying 35th Mark was the lowest placed Brit at the end of the heats being classified down in 40th place. It was a real head scratcher as this was the Vice European Champion and he looked like he wasn’t going to even make the final! But in the tricky Pre Final conditions he went from 20th to 3rd and now the dream was starting to become a possibility.Starting from the outside of row three Mark made a decent start and was quickly up to 3rd. Some dicing for 2nd had allowed the leader, Marco Settimo, to get away but Mark was getting his head down and was trying to chase down the Italian despite no assistance from behind. The pressure was getting clearly getting to Settimo with his lead just half a second going onto the last lap. Kimber did enough to make Settimo defend, but was never quite close enough to mount a real challenge. Settimo celebrated coming across the line, but it would be Kimber who stood on the top step after Settimo received a ten second penalty. Settimo wasn’t the only driver to have his podium spot taken away, Johnathan Hoggard defended valiantly to finish 3rd but received a twenty second penalty dropping him all the way down to 23rd place. Axel Charpentier had finished 14th, but his front fairing was in meaning he was demoted to 21st place. On a brighter note, William Pettitt recovered brilliantly after a bad qualifying to finish 7th place! His pace in the final was impressive and had he of started higher than 20th there’s no doubt he would of been in the lead battle. The same can be said for Olli Caldwell, Olli was pushed back to 22nd at the start but charged back through to finish 8th and set a new lap record! Impressive stuff given the circumstances. The most unfortunate of the Brits was Joe Turney. He’s been hit with several penalties all week and in the final after running in 7th with over half the race to go he was taken out.
